Injustice Department: For former President Trump, the Attorney General was his personal consiglieri. Attorney General Barr did not represent the United States of America, he represented Donald Trump. Pam Bondi is even more under Trump’s spell. But Barr and Bondi were not the only attorney general to do this. Eric Holder was a close friend of President Obama. In fact, Holder was held in Contempt of Congress. The House of Representatives held Eric Holder in contempt of Congress over his failure to turn over documents related to the Fast and Furious scandal, the first time Congress has taken such a dramatic move against a sitting Cabinet official. Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, went to jail for his Watergate-related crimes.

Most of the States elect their attorneys general. We should similarly elect the U.S. Attorney General in his or her own right, so that the attorney general and the Justice Department remain independent of the White House.

“Joel Joseph provides a fascinating, in-depth and very readable history of the nation’s most controversial attorneys general. His provocative proposal is worth serious con-sideration by anyone who believes that independent law enforcement is necessary to the survival of a democracy.”—Jesse Wegman, Editorial Board, The New York Times.
